Edwards tore off the sheet of paper. The pencil still moved, its words barely legible:

I knew police would come hearing shot, so I hid in my place. Lost a good deal of blood and tonight thought I would give up and send for police and doctor. Tried telephone but could not talk and lost my nerve. When you came I hid again. Thought I might get out alive and get away but it started to bleed again and I came out to phone.

The pencil wavered and dropped from Duncan’s stiffening fingers. His head lolled back, jerked once horribly. There was a choking sob. Then his body went limp and his eyes stared glassily upward.

Outside, feet trampled in the hall, and the door shook under the impact of determined blows.
